How To Choose A Stance

It is natural for people to feel more comfortable riding their skateboard with a one particular foot always leading and one foot always pushing, however, some people might have a tough time deciding which way is better for them.

The main thing here is comfort. If you are comfortable riding with your left foot as your leading foot then by all means use that as your leading foot.

Regular is the name of the stance for people who ride with their left foot leading and their right foot pushing.

Goofy is the name of the stance for people who ride with their right foot leading and their left foot pushing.

Both stances are totally acceptable. There is nothing wrong with being goofy footed. It’s just a name.

Now that you know the basics about stances you are ready to choose one. There are a few simple tests you can try to see what stance is probably more suitable for you.

#1 - The Stair Test
Stand at the bottom of the step, or a set of stairs. Begin to walk up them naturally. Which foot did you use to step up the first stair? That foot is more likely to be the foot that you should use as your leading foot when riding.

#2 - The Slide Test
This will work best with a slippery floor and socked feet. Take a little run and slide across the floor while standing. The foot that was in front while you were sliding is likely the foot that will be your leading foot when skateboarding.
