Please Help Me Understand
After my previous post I was called a sellout by various commenters. Does this actually have any meaning? What am I selling out? What personal values have I compromised?
I do not understand what is wrong with profiting from my work. I’ve spent countless hours building and maintaining this site. If I no longer wish to maintain it, is it not my right to sell it? Should I be expected to let it sit and grow stagnant? Should I be expected to give it away to the visitors? Worst of all, should I be expected to continue working on it even though I no longer enjoy the work? Suppose we were talking, not of a website, but of a house. Heyday is a house I’ve planned out and constructed. I’ve thrown a lot of parties in this house. I no longer wish to keep the house. Do I owe you something for having given you the privilege of partying here?
I’m still the same person. If you view me differently, perhaps you were only using me for my house.
Stumble it!

I’m still not sure of whether this is real or not….
I would be disappointed if it were, not because I think you don’t have the right, but because I enjoyed “partying” here.
Some may blame you or call you a sell out because their disappointment seems too great to not have a blame.
They may think that you should keep the website up because they and many others enjoy it.
Let’s go with another analogy…
A skatepark generates no revenue for a municipality so they decide to get rid of it to make room for an ice rink, obviously upsetting the skateboarders, even though the city owns the skatepark.
Like I say, personally I support your decision (real or fake…) to sell the site simply because it IS yours, even if I will miss it.

The effort required to find community members who could help maintain this site is minimal.
Selling it and having it closed (is that what is being proposed?) seems unnecessary.

it’s not funny anymore when you put skateboard city into the joke.
If it’s true, then you have the right to sell the site, after all it’s yours. I, for one won’t judge you.

the thing im gonna miss is mostly the weekly video updates
April 10th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
so are you keeping alteredskate too?
April 10th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Mooncow, that’s probably the best comment ever made on Heyday.
otis, what is the value to me, of letting the site be run by other people?
Gibson, I’m not sure of the fate of Alteredskate. I haven’t updated it in a long time and currently I don’t plan to.

It’s a community site. It’s of value to lots of people other than you.
The main content generation can be communal too- trust a few other folks to add videos and you can kick back and focus on other things.
The primary content of this site- a couple links to videos hosted on other sites once week- isn’t the most involved thing to produce. Moderating the forum might be tasking, but that’s another thing that could be done with the help of some other trusted folks.
Through ad contracts, donations, products, the site could be made nearly or entirely self sufficient as far as money goes.
Of course it’s totally your decision to sell the site and move on to other things, but because I don’t think the effort required to maintain this site is too huge, it seems like it might be worth it to ask the community that wants the site to live to be the ones to help keep it alive.
April 10th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Will it be closed or we will be able to go to the forums and will you be there on the forums even if you sell it?
April 10th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
otis, you didn’t answer my question. You’ve provided answers of value it could provide to others, not to me.
Oli, it’s up to Skateboard City.
April 10th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
What will I do with my life when I won’t be a moderator of anything?
April 10th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
hd kinda went to shit anyway so whatever, this might actually be a positive change. cameron, i would’ve done the same thing in your position.
April 10th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
I don’t think it went to shit, I think its a good site and I’ve never been on forums fun like that usually I get bored and go on the forum like for 1 day or 2 days but on heyday I go check out every morning and after school to see if there are new things and all.
April 10th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
youre a sellout because youre handing it over to skateboard noob city. If anything, close it down before you hand it over to a bunch of retards. Guess you just dont see how the reputation of the site would drop tremendously when taking their “bid”
April 10th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
That is the correct answer!
Too bad you’re anonymous.
April 11th, 2008 at 1:30 am
cameron I’d just like to thank you for supporting me. You’re the fuckin man no matter what you do. Just keep in touch.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
so, its official, fuck april fools.
ruined hd.
April 11th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
haha for real
April 13th, 2008 at 2:44 am
Why don’t you guys all shut the fuck up, forget this bullshit and leave it up to Cameron.
You should be more focused on skating and not just some website. You act like there’s no other websites that have skate videos.
